Car Insurance

Car insurance is a common form of personal insurance, but policies are fairly adaptable. An insurance agent who specializes in this coverage can help drivers select a policy that suits their particular needs well.

Anyone who drives on public roads in Maine is generally required to maintain minimum levels of auto insurance.

What is car insurance?

Owning a vehicle comes with certain accepted risks, and it’s important to take protective measures against those risks. Defensive driving and seat belts help minimize the likelihood of a devastating accident. Should one occur, however, car insurance can provide Maine drivers with important financial protections.

What Maine residents need to carry auto insurance?

Anyone who drives on public roads in Maine is generally required to maintain minimum levels of auto insurance. State law normally requires at least:

  • $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident of bodily injury coverage
  • $25,000 per accident of property damage liability coverage
  • $2,000 per person of medical payments coverage
  • $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Many drivers choose to get more than the mandated minimum coverages, for these amounts generally do not provide sufficient protection against a major accident. Vehicles alone can cost more than $25,000 to replace, and even $50,000 often doesn’t cover the medical and other costs like lost wages, pain and suffering resulting from a significant injury (not to mention death).

What protections do auto insurance policies’ coverages provide?

Auto policies typically come with multiple coverages, and those coverages can give a variety of protections. Some commonly available coverages include the above and others:

  • Bodily Injury Coverage: Typically covers injuries that people not in the insured vehicle sustain
  • Medical Payments Coverage: Normally covers medical costs for injuries that people in the vehicle sustain
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: Generally covers damage to other vehicles or property
  • Collision Coverage: Typically covers multi-vehicle accident damage to the insured vehicle
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Normally covers other causes of damage to the insured vehicle
  • Gap Coverage: Generally covers the difference between a vehicle’s value and lease/loan’s balance
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM): Typically covers accidents that involve drivers with no insurance or insufficient insurance

Drivers who lease or finance vehicles are frequently required to carry collision, comprehensive and gap coverages, in addition to the state-mandated ones. The purpose of these other coverages is to protect the lender’s financial investment in a vehicle.

How can drivers save on auto insurance?

Drivers have a few ways to save on auto insurance. One of the most obvious is to forgo coverages and/or reduce limits, but these tactics usually aren’t recommended. Should an accident occur, these decisions can leave drivers without sufficient protection and with major expenses. Instead, a couple of other methods can more responsibly save drivers money.

First, insurance companies frequently offer a variety of discounts on their policies. Loyalty, new customer, multi-policy and safe driver discounts are merely some of what’s available.

Second, comparing quotes with an independent insurance agent makes it easy to see which insurers offer the necessary coverages at the lowest price. Independent agents are able to shop around because they aren’t connected to any one insurance company.
