ATV Insurance

ATV insurance is specifically designed to cover the unique risks associated with operating ATVs, UTVs and similar vehicles. Policies often provide coverage for the vehicle, driver and passengers.

Although Maine state law typically doesn't mandate four wheeler insurance, nearly all ATV owners should consider it. It’s available for all-terrain vehicles, utility task vehicles and four-wheelers.

What is ATV insurance?

For the many Maine residents who enjoy outdoor adventures, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are great fun to use during the non-winter months. These vehicles also present risks, though, and those risks should be considered before heading out on the trail. In addition to wearing a helmet and practicing safe riding, it’s often also a good idea to get ATV insurance.

Who in Maine might need four wheeler insurance?

Although Maine state law typically doesn’t mandate four wheeler insurance, nearly all ATV owners should consider it. It’s available for all-terrain vehicles, utility task vehicles and four-wheelers.

Not insuring these vehicles can lead to significant liability risks in case of an incident, along with major costs if a vehicle is substantially damaged in an accident.

Do riders need to insure their four-wheelers when financing one?

Four-wheelers that are financed or leased usually do need to be insured. The terms of a loan or lease frequently stipulate that certain coverages remain in place for the duration of the loan, as a means of protecting the vehicle against damage.

Even though financing is unlikely to require rider liability coverages, it’s still generally a good idea to have liability coverages in addition to any lender-stipulated vehicle damage ones.

What coverage options are available through four wheeler insurance policies?

Four wheeler policies usually offer a wide array of coverages, many of which are akin to those found in auto insurance policies. Some examples include:

  • Collision Coverage: May cover damage to the ATV from a collision with another off-road or road vehicle, or with a road vehicle.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: May cover damage to the ATV from incidents not related to accidents, such as vandalism, theft, fire or falling objects.
  • Accessory Coverage: May cover damage to or loss of accessories, such as trailers, helmets, other safety gear and aftermarket upgrades.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): May cover injuries to the ATV operator and passengers during vehicle use.
  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: May cover injuries to others not riding the insured ATV.
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: May cover damage to other people’s property or vehicles.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage: May cover accidents involving other ATVs or vehicles, where the other operator doesn’t carry adequate insurance.

Each of these coverages, though similar to auto insurance, is tailored specifically for ATVs.

Can homeowners insurance cover ATVs?

Some homeowners insurance policies might offer limited ATV or four wheeler coverage, potentially covering liability lawsuits and/or damage to an ATV. Before relying only on their homeowners policy, though, riders should consult with an insurance agent experienced in ATV coverage.

First, some homeowners policies don’t provide any ATV coverage. Second, homeowners policies that do have ATV coverage often limit the size and power of the AVTs that they’ll protect. Larger ATVs could be excluded from the homeowners policy’s protections.

A knowledgeable agent can assess any ATV coverage that’s available via a homeowners policy. If none or only insufficient protection is available, the agent can help riders choose a four wheeler policy that adequately protects their ATV.
